Golf, A Template for Success

What is SUCCESS?

First of all, you are probably looking at the title of this blog and wondering, how does a game, like golf, exemplify a template for success? In my opinion it is perfect for that and demonstrates every aspect of achieving success. Let’s start with a definition of success: there are multiple definitions but the one that I like the best is “the accomplishment of an aim or a purpose.” And you must have a “process” to accomplish that aim or purpose. A process is a series of events or steps that lead to a desired outcome and here the outcome is simply being successful.

Success is the one thing people crave more than almost any other, except maybe love.  But getting success isn’t as easy as wanting it. Many people focus on the goal and what it will mean for them, but they don’t devote the time to how they will get there.  Think about it. Have you ever fantasized about a certain lifestyle – perhaps one filled with relaxing vacations in exotic locations or one filled with awards and recognitions in your field?

If you have, you are not alone. But many people fantasize about the end – the result – but they don’t create a plan to get there. As a result, they end up nowhere – except for confused, frustrated, and disappointed. Why? They haven’t created a success plan. They haven’t considered the process.  It has once been said that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

If one advances confidently in the direction of
his dreams and endeavors to live the life which
he has imagined, he will meet with success
unexpected in common hours.
– Henry David Thoreau-

Defining the Process

Becoming successful is not an overnight miracle; it is a process just like learning how to walk was a process. You need to find and apply your own pathway, your process to success, coupled with your passion. There are some basic steps to the process and I will show them to you with golf as the template. You don’t need to know how to play golf. We should know that the intent is to get the ball in the cup from varying distances with the least number of strokes. You need to do that 18 times.

Components of the Plan

With any plan you need certain components, and Golf is the template for success. First of all, you must have a starting point. You must be able to visualized plan your actions. On the tee box, you need to plan your shot and see it and feel it. Next is the path to get there, the fairway. It is filled with challenges as is getting to your goal. Sometime you succeed with that step and sometimes you fail. It has been said that the most successful people are the ones that failed the most. Michael Jordan said:

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

There will be distractions along the way. From the pictures above you can see sand traps, tall grass, water, and even alligators in certain areas. With golf, most of the time your goal is within sight, the cup with a flag to help you see it. If you don’t picture your goal, if you don’t see it, you won’t know when you get there.

Summary

Keep these steps in mind as you you use golf as your template for success:

  • Capture your vision
  • Build your team
  • Develop your success plan
  • Work your success plan
  • Tweak your plan
  • Work your plan again
  • Embrace your success
